CHAPTER 26

"I was conscious of another traveller, a Rastafarian wearing the obligatory woollie 'tea cosy' style hat in the colours of the Jamaican flag"

I leaned forward and said ‘Would you like a hand with that?’

‘Why, you a doctor man or ting?’ was the terse reply as the Rastaman glared back at me.

‘No’ I said, pulling up the bottom of my trouser leg slightly above my sock to reveal my own badge of honour ‘But I know how difficult it is to put one of those things on and I just thought you might like some help.’

‘OK man’ he replied and handed me the bandages.

After I had carefully pulled the bandages over his swollen hands I said the inevitable.

‘If you don’t mind me asking, how on earth did you do that then?’

‘Ah, a Machete Man. ‘Im come from Jamaica an’ try to carve me up.  But I show ‘im.’

‘Bloody hell.’ I said ‘Someone took a machete to you?  It’s a wonder you’ve got any fingers left.’

‘Yeahman, ‘im tink ‘im got me cornered, dem Machete Man from Jamaica know what dey is doin.  But I showed ‘im, I did.’

Just what the Hell is an Ex Parte Head?
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
'Opium'

'Yes, Opium, that's what's landed me here' I mused as the Clerk of the Court barked 'All stand' and we did. More ...

.... I've heard it said that in London you are never more than ten feet away from a rat and, regrettably, during my time in The City I had brushed up against a fair few of them. Sleek and polished they were, but rats nonetheless. More ...

.... In some folk a few genetic links have somehow splintered off from the spiralling helix of DNA that defines us as 'Homo Sapiens'.

And unfortunately the missing bits have been the ones responsible for morals and scruples. More ...

Think Arnold Schwarzenegger's sister, with a very bad attitude
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
.... Now I can understand why a woman would keep a rape alarm in her bag to scare off attackers, but this wasn't good enough for Brünhilde, she kept a 10,000volt stun gun in her bag so she could actually take them on.

Which meant I wasn't going to get a look at the evil twin's books at any time during office hours, at least not without the serious prospect of inhaling the fumes of my own burning body hair. More ...

.... I had crashed through the double doors in the corridor like a rhinocerous, leaving the hinges to creak and the safety dampers to hiss loudly as the doors returned to their closed position. No one in the office could have missed the din. I had no choice but to continue into the room. More ...

Steve Wilson just did not strike me as the kind of guy who would take to prison food
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Renault couldn’t do much to Pam Hillman as she knew where too many bodies were buried in the game of account abuse. But perhaps sidelining her husband Martin Hillman was a way of sending a message to them both; ‘Your husband’s career is paying the price of what you’ve done Mrs Hillman.’ perhaps was the message. Nasty. But smart. And it also showed again just how ruthless Renault could be, and what I could expect from them. More ...

.... I hadn’t given Renault or Steve Wilson permission to access the web site and accessing a password protected computer using a false ID and someone else’s password is illegal. Section 1, Computer Misuse Act, 1990. Punishable upon conviction by a £5,000 fine or up to 6 months in jail. Ouch. And Steve Wilson just did not strike me as the kind of guy who would take to prison food. More ...

The Revenge of The Whinger
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
.... Rather than wait until the Trial, solicitor Paul Kite of IBB Law was wasting no time at all in setting out what Renault's case strategy would be. Because it was my word against those of Renault's Toby Johnstone and Keith Hayles, IBB Law wanted to test every angle of my version of events for a weakness that would undermine the fundamental issue of who started off the BALPA Affair and who knew about it.

So solicitor
Paul Kite asked for the precise words spoken in that telephone conversation with Toby Johnstone and at the lunch table with Keith Hayles. The precise words that I would therefore be relying upon at the Trial in representing my case. Not just a summary, but the ‘precise words’.

It was a crass move on the part of IBB Law to make such a strategic request so far in advance of the Trial. More ...

CHAPTER 16
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - .... Members Of The Judiciary Take Very Unkindly To Being Misled ....
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
.... this particular statement by barrister Andrew Bruce of Serle Court Chambers was outrageous, it was completely untrue, and in the heat of the moment I considered it a blatant attempt to cover up just exactly when Renault knew for certain what was happening with the BALPA account, but still continued to let me buy cars. I couldn’t let it go by. I just butted in.

‘I’m sorry’ I blurted out ‘but Mr Bruce knows very well that the audit didn’t take place until September, just before proceedings commenced, yet IBB Law has told me in writing that the unauthorised web site access that took place almost six months earlier happened because the employees involved believed they were investigating a fraud, which means that the conclusion on fraud couldn’t possibly have first come from the audit.’

Now members of the judiciary take very unkindly to being misled, and whether barrister Andrew Bruce’s response was just an error or not, I will never know, and now that the heat of battle has died away, I will forever give him the benefit of the doubt on that point; it could simply have been an honest mistake. More ...

CHAPTER 17
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Win Or Lose, Bring It On!
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
I had thrown Paul Kite at IBB Law the spade, he had passed it on to Renault which, completely ignoring 'The Spade Rule' (remember The Spade Rule?), had handed the spade in turn to Steve Wilson and then Toby Johnstone and presumably told them ‘Dig boys, dig’.

And gosh, had they dug - themselves into a hole. Because then I sat down in front of my computer again, loaded up the word processor once more, opened up the original draft of my Witness Statement with all the corroborative material in it, made some tweaks to refresh it for the points raised by Steve Wilson and Toby Johnstone in their new Witness Statements, saved the file and then turned off the computer again.

You see, I wasn’t going to send IBB Law my new Witness Statement until it would be too late for them to do anything about its contents but cry.

Win or lose, I loved this game. Bring it on! More ...

CHAPTER 20
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The Devil may pick his own time to put in an appearance
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Whatever pressure she might have been under, as Carolyn Sample settled into questioning she presented an air of calm and steadfastness which I had warned Laura about and which we knew would go down well with the Court.

Carolyn Sample wouldn’t be rattled by the same tactics used so effectively on Steve Wilson.  And so, rather than bludgeon the truth out of her, Laura is going to wait for Carolyn Sample to tell it in her own good time.  The Devil will be in the detail, and from what’s coming out now it looks like we are in for a long wait before he puts in an appearance, the timing of which may well be of his choosing rather than ours. More ...
